Review: Captain Marvel

Review: Captain Marvel

“Women cannot and will not be stopped!” That’s basically my takeaway from Marvel’s latest film and first foray with a woman at the helm, Captain Marvel. In case you aren’t an avid comic book reader: Captain Marvel follows the origin story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson, Room), former U.S. Air Force pilot, who is now a part of the Galaxy’s most elite Kree military squad, Starforce. This team is specifically charged with the eradication of the Skrulls, a shape-shifting alien race that invades planets for their own personal gain. Instead of diving heavily into Danvers’ childhood, this origin story meets her in 1995, full adult and total badass.

Under the leadership and training of Commander Yon-Rogg (Jude Law, The Holiday), Danvers,  Korath (Djimon Hounsou, Gladiator), Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan, Crazy Rich Asians), Att-Lass (Algenis Pérez Soto, Sugar), and Bron-Char (Rune Temte, The Last Kingdom) round out Starforce. When a mission goes awry, Danvers is thrust into Earth, unexpectedly connecting her with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg, Iron Man) & Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, A Time To Kill). Danvers comes up against more than she bargained for, causing an inevitable shift that eventually allows her to bloom. When more of her past is revealed and the truth uncovered, Danvers has to create an Earthly team she can trust, which isn’t complete without her best friend and fellow U.S. Air Force Pilot, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch, Fast Girls) and Maria’s fierce and brilliant young daughter, Monica Rambeau (Akira Akbar, This Is Us). The movie is fun with lots of great comedic moments and a few new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) duos that we never knew we needed. I adored Danvers and Fury together, but I also found myself wanting more screen-time for Danvers and the Rambeaus. Not only does Maria show that she is a Black woman force who can handle her own in every situation, but her daughter Monica is really the future Captain Marvel in training that we need. Not immune to some pacing issues and predictable elements, the film does manage to beautifully capture the essence of the ’90s and a woman coming into her own as the superhero she was always destined to be. It shows the sheer strength and beauty in sisterhood, womanhood, and motherhood, along the lines and ways we are now accustomed to seeing such MCU relationships portrayed onscreen, thanks to Black Panther, Ant-Man & The Wasp, and more. Larson knocks it out of the park as Danvers, she is lovable, witty, strong and doesn’t take crap from anyone. Jackson is witty, and green in a way that is new from the Fury we have grown to know and love since Phase 1. We finally get to see just how he lost his eye and the beginning of his partnership with an even greener Coulson. This film could make a wonderful essay. Is it my top favorite film in the MCU? No. Is it in my top ten? Absolutely! The soundtrack is impeccable and deserving of multiple listens.  The film certainly continues the Marvel trend of setting us up for the inevitable heartbreak (my theory, not a spoiler) that Avengers: Endgame is likely about to bring. While I cannot reveal too much more, I can say that Captain Marvel’s powers are extraordinary and  I wish we would’ve seen more of this type of power showcased on the big screen when I was growing up. I will always stand behind us needing to see more women on-screen in all of our glory, showcasing our ferocity and complexities as the superheroes we all are. Captain Marvel is a reminder that we still have more work to do (especially when it comes to the implementation of women of color), but it will most definitely continue to pave the way for more women heroes to have their own feature films in the MCU.  After seeing this film, I can 100% say that I couldn’t be more excited about what new direction and heroes Marvel has up their sleeves for Phase 4 of the MCU expansion.  So, be prepared to watch a mighty heroine come to life and come into her own, with her squad beside her. Captain Marvel is in theaters now! Well, if you suddenly need a good essay about a movie or, for example, about nurses, then you can always use the services of a nursing essay writer who will help you in this matter.
