The Official Film Poster for The Hate U Give is Here
The official poster for 20th Century Fox’s The Hate U Give has arrived, and it’s an interesting re-imagining of the original cover art for Angie Thomas’ New York Times bestseller.
The poster retains the simplicity of the source, centering a Black girl holding a large protest sign bearing nothing but the title. Here, however, we see Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) donning dark, distressed jeans in place of the original torn shorts. More notably, the red headscarf has been replaced with a plain red hoodie. This particular change could be a potential nod to Trayvon Martin, whose memory is often commemorated with a hooded sweater similar to the one he was wearing at the time of his murder. It’s an effective way to honor the novel while giving the image its own film-centric spin.
The story stars Stenberg who plays Starr, a girl who witnesses the fatal shooting of her friend at the hands of a cop. Oscillating between the stark opposite worlds of her working class Black community and the white, rich prep school she attends, the tragedy brings insurmountable tension between the two groups. She must overcome all of it to stand up for what’s right.
Directed by George Tillman, Jr. (whose also directed Soul Food, Notorious, and episodes of Luke Cage and This Is Us), The Hate U Give also star Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Anthony Mackie Common, and Issa Rae. It premieres in theaters October 19. You can watch the official trailer here.
